INTRODUCTION: Extended periods of bed rest and mechanical ventilation (MV) have devastating effects on the body. BACKGROUND: Early mobility (EM) for patients in respiratory failure is safe and feasible, and an interprofessional team is recommended. Using simulation to train EM skills improves student confidence. The purpose of this study was to enable health care student collaboration as an interprofessional team in providing safe management and monitoring during an EM simulation for a patient requiring MV. METHODS: Nursing (n = 33), respiratory (n = 7), occupational (n = 24), and physical therapist students (n = 55) participated in an EM interprofessional education (IPE) simulation experience. A mixed-methods analytic approach was used with pre/post quantitative analysis of the Student Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education-Revised, Version 2 instrument and qualitative analysis of students' guided reflection papers. RESULTS: Pre/post surveys completion rate was 39.5% (n = 47). The Student Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education-Revised, Version 2 instrument indicated a significant improvement (P = .037) in students' perceptions of interprofessional collaborative practice. Qualitative data showed a positive response to the EM simulation IPE. Themes reflected all 4 Interprofessional Education Collaborative competencies. DISCUSSION: This study demonstrated improved perception of interprofessional collaborative practice and better understanding of the Interprofessional Education Collaborative competencies. CONCLUSION: Students collaborated in the simulation-based IPE to provide EM for a patient requiring MV and reported perceived benefits of the experience.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A Health and Disabilities Interprofessional Education (IPE) course was implemented to join three healthcare disciplines together to collaboratively plan, implement, and reflect on professional roles and responsibilities. The goal and purpose of this course was to create an advancement of interprofessional education and practice within health science professions early in their students' programs utilizing innovative teaching methods working directly with individuals with disabilities. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY AND SETTING: 72 students were assigned to interprofessional teams of 10-11 people. Through asynchronous and synchronous learning activities, student teams worked together to plan and conduct community-based client interviews. FINDINGS: Quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods were used to explore the impact of interprofessional experiential learning experiences. Qualitative data showed a greater awareness and understanding of the different roles and responsibilities in interprofessional teams as well as a greater appreciation for the value of interacting with persons with disabilities (PWD) during their training. Quantitative data showed a significant change in students' understanding of their roles and responsibilities as a member of an interprofessional team, their confidence with working with PWD in a future healthcare capacity, as well as their understanding of how the social determinants of health may influence the healthcare experience of a PWD. SUMMARY: Interprofessional education and experiential learning opportunities are good ways to facilitate "real" patient care experiences and team roles and responsibilities. This enables healthcare students to practice communication, build relationships, and understand the lived experience of their patients.

The professions of pharmacy and social work are not generally assumed to directly collaborate in patient care; however, these professions are complementary. Health and wellbeing outcomes are significantly improved when care is managed by an interprofessional team that communicates and collaborates to ensure all aspects of care are effectively managed. The creation of educational opportunities for students to practice working together provides enhanced educational experiences and leads to their success as professionals. Pharmacy and social work faculty developed an interprofessional education activity specifically aimed at integrative student learning. Faculty and students based on various islands throughout the state of Hawai'i and the US territory of Guam participated in the experience. The case study encouraged interprofessional teamwork and collaboration. The case study also challenged students to share profession-specific knowledge with each other. Mean evaluation scores were compared between hybrid and fully online platforms. Evaluation scores were high and at least as good or higher in the fully online exercise compared to the hybrid exercises. Using the 20-item pre-post format, Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey, results indicated statistically significant improvements in scores for all questions and domains (all P<.001). When hybrid training and fully online training were compared, there were no significant differences in pre scores, but post domain scores were significantly higher in students who experienced fully online training. This interprofessional case-based activity successfully promoted interprofessional learning and collaboration. Introducing learners to this type of collaborative practice while in school is critical for future collaboration in the workforce.

BACKGROUND: Meaningful interprofessional education (IPE) involves students from at least two professions interacting to learn with, about, and from one another. Our objective was to describe a novel online approach used to create meaningful IPE within a social determinants of health (SDoH) workshop. INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION ACTIVITY: This online workshop integrated four different professions' perspectives on SDoH (social-work, public-health, nursing, and pharmacy). Each six-student interprofessional team was assigned a local neighborhood. This week-long workshop had numerous activities (pre- and post-workshop quizzes, a SDoH-primer video, video self-introduction to teammates, a windshield questionnaire with two subsequent clinical cases, a post-workshop reflection, and post-workshop evaluation). For discussion, asynchronous video-based responses were used instead of traditional text-based discussion-boards. DISCUSSION: Quantitatively comparing quiz scores, students' SDoH knowledge increased with this workshop. Qualitatively from evaluations, most students found this workshop helpful and meaningful. Supporting use of video-based responses, many students' favorite aspect was interacting and collaborating within their interprofessional teams, although some students desired synchronous activities instead. Faculty facilitators confirmed that meaningful IPE interactions occurred. IMPLICATIONS: In short, students from multiple health-professions learned SDoH-content and, using video-based responses, interacted asynchronously during this online workshop. This report demonstrated one tool available to help facilitate meaningful IPE asynchronously. This asynchronous, online IPE workshop appears to be a promising format to be integrated with other in-person IPE sessions.

Many institutions of higher education have designed curricula for health professions learners based on the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) core competencies for interprofessional collaborative practice. As part of a periodic cycle of revision, in 2023, IPEC released revised competencies that, for the first time, explicitly embedded concepts of anti-oppressive practice. Curriculum designers seeking to revise their interprofessional learning activities to map onto the new competencies can benefit from the experience of a health professions graduate school in Boston, MA. Since 2021, faculty members and experts in justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion have revamped a required interprofessional education curriculum to include anti-oppression competencies. They targeted narrative elements of the courses like a common reading, case studies, and simulation scenarios for revision. By using narrative to introduce anti-oppression competencies like recognizing bias, analyzing systems of power, and intervening to mitigate microaggressions, course designers encouraged learners to cultivate reflection about their relationship to the care team, the patient, and the community.

BACKGROUND: Community-based interprofessional education (CBIPE) has been proven effective in enhancing the interprofessional competencies of medical and health professional students. However, there is a lack of evaluation on the impact of experiential CBIPE among undergraduate medical and health promotion students in Thailand. Therefore, the objective of this study is to assess the influence of CBIPE learning on the collaborative competencies of these students. METHODS: A one-group pre-posttest design in 193 (152 medical students and 41 health promotion) students were involved in the CBIPE program, later divided into 12 groups. Data was collected by direct observations of mentors using the Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey (ICCAS). The Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the CBIPE program. RESULTS: A total of 175 (90.67%) completed ICCAS and satisfaction questions before and after the CBIPE program. The mean age of respondents was 20.29 ± 1.63 years; 60.57% were women and 39.43% were men. The results showed a significant increase in collaborative competencies before and after the 2-week course. Gender-stratified analysis showed an improvement after CBIPE training for all subscales in women, while the communication, collaboration, conflict management, and functioning team skills segment score was significantly higher in the post-assessment among men. CONCLUSION: The implementation of CBIPE learning was successful in enhancing collaborative competencies among both medical and health promotion students. These findings will provide valuable insights for the design and improvement of CBIPE learning programs in other universities.

OBJECTIVE: Interprofessional education (IPE) varies across schools/colleges of pharmacy. Long-term impact of IPE on interprofessional collaborative competencies remains uncertain despite available data on singular experiences. This study aimed to evaluate changes in pharmacy students' collaborative abilities over the second and third professional years (PYs). METHODS: Students completed the Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Scale - Revised (ICCAS-R) after 2 large-scale interprofessional forums that occurred approximately 8 months apart. Four cohorts of students were used to examine the longitudinal change in collaborative abilities: cohort 1 (2019), cohort 2 (2020), cohort 3 (2021) and cohort 4 (2022). The ICCAS-R was used to capture data from 4 timepoints for each student in each cohort: prior to the Spring Forum in PY2 (T1), after the Spring Forum in PY2 (T2), prior to the Fall Forum in PY3 (T3), and after the Fall Forum in PY3 (T4). Using repeated measures analysis of variance, 4 total mean scores (T1 = pre1, T2 = post1, T3 = pre2, T4 = post2) were compared. RESULTS: Four cohorts (N = 414) completed the interprofessional forums and 336 (81%) completed the ICCAS-R instrument and were included. In each cohort, total mean scores increased T1 to T2 and T3 to T4, indicating an increase in self-assessed abilities pre/post-forum. Total mean scores decreased between T2 and T3, indicating that collaborative abilities decreased during the period between interprofessional forums. CONCLUSION: While students' collaborative abilities increased around the time of the forum experiences, these changes decreased in between experiences. These findings suggest that interprofessional competencies should be reinforced at multiple time points to support enduring effects.

Bedside interdisciplinary rounds (IDR) improve teamwork, communication, and collaborative culture in inpatient settings. Implementation of bedside IDR in academic settings depends on engagement from resident physicians; however, little is known about their knowledge and preferences related to bedside IDR. The goal of this program was to identify medical resident perceptions about bedside IDR and to engage resident physicians in the design, implementation, and assessment of bedside IDR in an academic setting. This is a pre-post mixed methods survey assessing resident physicians' perceptions surrounding a stakeholder-informed bedside IDR quality improvement project. Resident physicians in the University of Colorado Internal Medicine Residency Program (n = 77 pre-implementation survey responses from 179 eligible participants - response rate 43%) were recruited via e-mail to participate in surveys assessing perceptions surrounding the inclusion of interprofessional team members, timing, and preferred structure of bedside IDR. A bedside IDR structure was created based on input from resident and attending physicians, patients, nurses, care coordinators, pharmacists, social workers, and rehabilitation specialists. This rounding structure was implemented on acute care wards in June 2019 at a large academic regional VA hospital in Aurora, CO. Resident physicians were surveyed post implementation (n = 58 post-implementation responses from 141 eligible participants - response rate 41%) about interprofessional input, timing, and satisfaction with bedside IDR. The pre-implementation survey revealed several important resident needs during bedside IDR. Post-implementation survey results revealed high overall satisfaction with bedside IDR among residents, improved perceived efficiency of rounds, preserved quality of education, and value added by interprofessional input. Results also suggested areas for future improvement including timeliness of rounds and enhanced systems-based teaching. This project successfully engaged residents as stakeholders in system-level interprofessional change by incorporating their values and preferences into a bedside IDR framework.

This exploratory study looked at the experiences of social work, occupational therapy, and nursing students who participated in an interprofessional simulation that was offered virtually due to the impact of COVID-19. The simulation was a one-day event that introduced advanced care planning to the students through an IPE team approach and incorporated various learning and teaching modalities. Using conventional content analysis of the post-program survey data from 255 students (35 occupational therapy; 87 social work; and 133 nursing), three primary themes were identified for the value of learning virtual interprofessional collaboration during a pandemic: (1) catalyst for telehealth education; (2) patient, family & professional safety; and (3) connection and continuity of care. In addition, students identified four primary themes that were learned and perceptions of what could lie ahead beyond the simulation: (1) patient & family convenience and inclusion; (2) expand interprofessional team involvement; (3) alleviate disparities/increase access; and (4) the "new normal" of virtual IP Collaboration.

Collaborative learning has documented benefits. Restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic prevented in-person collaborative experiences, therefore creating a pathway for online ones. An inter-university team previously created and published a novel framework that fosters collaborative learning for emergency/disaster preparedness and uses scenarios that attract student participation from a spectrum of disciplines. Here, we detail the implementation and evaluation of this framework in a virtual setting. Analysis of pre- and post-surveys from the virtual event revealed similar results to the previous in-person iterations. Results for both in-person and virtual events demonstrated that students had higher confidence and interest in emergency/disaster preparedness and interprofessional teamwork after participation. Implementation of this framework in a virtual setting can facilitate a positive student learning experience and inter-university collaboration.

INTRODUCTION: Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) programs have an emphasis on developing skills in providing family-centered and interdisciplinary care. Due to Coronavirus pandemic-related restrictions, opportunities for interdisciplinary education were limited for the 2020-2021 LEND Trainee cohort at The Ohio State University Nisonger Center. Standardized Patient (SP) encounters can be a mechanism for instruction and assessment of interprofessional competence. METHODS: An SP encounter was developed for the The Ohio State University 2020-2021 LEND Cohort. Prior to the activity, participants (N = 11) were given clinic notes to review from their respective disciplines. During the activity, participants met virtually to develop collaborative recommendations which were then delivered to the SP who portrayed the mother of a young child receiving a new diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Following the encounter, 4 LEND faculty observers completed the Modified McMaster-Ottawa Team Rating Scale and participants completed the Interprofessional Collaboration Competency Attainment Scale-Revised (ICCAS-R). RESULTS: Eleven LEND trainees completed the ICCAS-R with an overall increase in the mean score from 3.86 to 4.12. Four LEND faculty members completed the Modified McMaster-Ottawa Team Rating Scale, with the Communication domain demonstrating the highest level of competence. DISCUSSION: This activity was well-received by both faculty and LEND trainees. Although delivered in virtual format, it could easily be transitioned to an in-person encounter for future LEND trainees. The success of this activity further supports that standardized patient encounters can be a feasible mechanism for instruction and assessment of interprofessional competencies and serve as a training mechanism for LEND programs.

An integrated medication management (IMM) model was implemented in a medical center ward to improve the delivery of clinical pharmaceutical services (CPSs). This model incorporated a ward-based clinical pharmacist who performed medication reconciliation and medication reviews. It was perceived to promote interprofessional collaboration between pharmacists and non-pharmacist healthcare professionals (NPHPs, including attending physicians, nurse practitioners, and registered nurses). This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the IMM on NPHPs' intentions to collaborate with pharmacists and understand the mechanism of the impact of the IMM on interprofessional collaboration. A sequential explanatory mixed methods design was employed in the study. Initially, a questionnaire was administered to assess the effects of the IMM on NPHPs' intentions to collaborate with pharmacists. The NPHPs' experiences with the IMM were then documented using semi-structured interviews with inductive thematic analysis. Fifty-eight NPHPs completed the questionnaire, and NPHPs from the intervention ward reported a higher intention to discuss patient-related medication issues with pharmacists, indicating collaboration. Eleven NPHPs were interviewed, and they stated having better working relationships with pharmacists, experiencing more effective CPSs, and noting improved communication with pharmacists. The integration of quantitative and qualitative findings demonstrates that the critical mechanism of the IMM in promoting collaborative relationships is to integrate pharmacists into medical practice, which familiarizes NPHPs with pharmacists' roles, improves communication, and enables pharmacists to identify NPHPs' needs. To summarize, allowing ward-based pharmacists to engage in medical teams on a regular basis appears vital for improving interprofessional teamwork. Furthermore, stakeholders aiming to promote CPS in their institutions should consider the needs and communication channels among NPHPs.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Older persons with low socioeconomic status in the United States have different and unique health needs compared to younger persons. As part of a student-led, interprofessional partnership, we performed a needs assessment of community dwelling older persons with low socioeconomic status in an urban location within Ohio, USA. METHODS: Three entities participated in the needs assessment: a student-run health clinic, a Federally Qualified Health Center, and an apartment complex of the study population. Health professional students from medical, dental, nursing, social work, nutrition, and physician assistant programs led the needs assessment process. The process consisted of multiple phases, which included preliminary literature review, survey development, data collection, and analysis. The final survey was multidisciplinary, with six content areas covered in 37 items. RESULTS: One hundred nineteen survey responses were received, and multiple areas of need were identified including food insecurity, dental care access, and mental health. 93% of participants had at least one unmet health need and 39% of respondents met our classification for high need. The needs of the local study population had key differences from previously published data in more generalized populations of older community-dwelling individuals in the United States, notably lower utilization of dental care (43% vs. 66%), increased prevalence of possible food insecurity (30% vs. 17%), and increased use of age-appropriate preventive cancer screening services. CONCLUSIONS: Multiple areas of need were successfully identified through a student-led interprofessional needs assessment. Future student teams can address the identified needs, again through interprofessional collaborations. This process may have unique benefits to help build robust community-academic partnerships, while fostering interprofessional collaborative opportunities among healthcare students.

Empirical evidence indicates that collaborative interprofessional practice leads to positive health outcomes. Further, there is an abundance of evidence examining student and/or faculty perceptions of learning or satisfaction about the interprofessional education (IPE) learning experience. However, there is a dearth of research linking IPE interventions to patient outcomes. The objective of this scoping review was to describe and summarize the evidence linking IPE interventions to the delivery of effective patient care. A three-step search strategy was utilized for this review with articles that met the following criteria: publications dated 2015-2020 using qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods; the inclusion of healthcare professionals, students, or practitioners who had experienced IPE or training that included at least two collaborators within coursework or other professional education; and at least one of ten Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services quality measures (length of stay, medication errors, medical errors, patient satisfaction scores, medication adherence, patient and caregiver education, hospice usage, mortality, infection rates, and readmission rates). Overall, n=94 articles were identified, providing overwhelming evidence supporting a positive relationship between IPE interventions and several key quality health measures including length of stay, medical errors, patient satisfaction, patient or caregiver education, and mortality. Findings from this scoping review suggest a critical need for the development, implementation, and evaluation of IPE interventions to improve patient outcomes.

Instruments to assess interprofessional behaviors in prelicensure interprofessional education (IPE) lack validity and reliability data. No individual behavioral assessment instrument met all standards of the Quality Appraisal of Interprofessional Learning Scales (QuAILS) checklist (Oates & Davidson, 2015). The IPA and iSOFT instruments provided the most substantial validity and reliability evidence. Future validation research studies of interprofessional education (IPE) behavioral instruments that evaluate interprofessional professionalism (IPP) domains are needed in nursing education.

Background: This article focuses on a growing, global recognition of the importance of the field of interprofessional education for person-centered collaborative practice (IPECP) expressed through high-level policy and accreditation decisions/actions taking place in 5 countries. Policy decisions are used to motivate strategies related to IPECP that align with national health plans, and workforce issues. Methods: Using a collective of representative stories from around the globe, a grouping of case studies were developed to illustrate different approaches and challenges to IPECP implementation. Results: Institutions from countries of various income levels face many similar challenges in the execution, delivery, and sustainability of IPECP. All programs face issues of financing, of preparing faculty, of developing and organizing curricula, and of bridging between campus and community. Discussion: Policies are being developed that promote a global approach to the inclusion of IPECP in the accreditation and regulation of postsecondary institutions and health service organizations, in keeping with WHO National Health Workforce Accounts. Policies developed promote and demonstrate the benefits of IPECP through remote emergency learning methods. The policies also build national systems for IPECP as an integral part of continuing professional development and lifelong learning. The organization of interprofessional research programs and the increasing publication of their results of such programs will lead to a clearer understanding of the efficacy of the field of IPECP. To ensure sustainability, stakeholders and policymakers should continue to foster policies that facilitate IPECP.

BACKGROUND: An important element of value-based health care (VBHC) is interprofessional collaboration in integrated practice units (IPUs) for the delivery of the complete cycle of care. High levels of interprofessional collaboration between clinical and nonclinical staff in IPUs are assumed rather than proven. Factors that may stimulate interprofessional collaboration in the context of VBHC are underresearched. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine relational coordination (RC) in VBHC and its antecedents. APPROACH: A questionnaire was used to examine the association of both team practices and organizational conditions with interprofessional collaboration in IPUs. Gittell's Relational Coordination Survey was drawn upon to measure interprofessional collaboration by capturing the relational dynamics in coordinated working. The questionnaire also included measures of team practices (team meetings and boundary spanning behavior) and organizational conditions (task interdependence and time constraints). RESULTS: The number of different professional groups participating in team meetings is positively associated with RC in IPUs. Boundary spanning behavior, task interdependence, and time constraints are not associated with RC. CONCLUSIONS: In IPUs, the diversity within interprofessional team meetings is important for establishing high-quality communication and relationships. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Hospital managers should prioritize facilitating and encouraging shared meetings to enhance RC levels among professional groups in IPUs.

BACKGROUND: Oral care is one of the most neglected nursing practices, lacking oral care protocols, efficient training, and awareness of the benefits for clients. In particular, there is a gap in research for nursing oral health assessment training for nursing curricula. METHOD: This study explored the effects of interprofessional collaboration (IPC) training between nurses and oral health therapists (OHT) using newly developed oral health assessment tools with an aim of reducing barriers for nursing oral health assessment. The self-efficacy and confidence of nursing students in oral health assessment were evaluated using pre- and posttraining surveys, and a focus group. RESULTS: Nursing students' confidence in incorporating oral health assessment into head-to-toe assessment improved after training. CONCLUSION: Nursing oral health assessment training with IPC, onsite OHT support, and oral health assessment tools improved the confidence and attitudes of nursing students in oral health assessment and care provision. BACKGROUND: A national survey we conducted in 2008 showed that many Japanese physicians interacted with and received gifts from pharmaceutical representatives (PRs) and had a positive attitude toward relationships with PRs. The revised promotion code of the Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association in 2019 prohibited the provision of non-educational promotional aids including sticky notes, mouse pads, and calendars. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, face-to-face meetings were socially restricted. This study assessed the extent of current Japanese physicians' involvement in pharmaceutical promotional activities and their attitudes toward relationships with PRs and to ascertain any changes between 2008 and 2021. We also examined the factors that predicted positive attitudes toward gifts from PRs. METHODS: From January to March 2021, we conducted a national mail survey of Japanese physicians in seven specialties: internal medicine, surgery, orthopedics, pediatrics, obstetrics-gynecology, psychiatry, and ophthalmology. RESULTS: There were 1636 participants and the response rate was 63.2%. Most physicians met face-to-face with PRs (78.8%), whereas only a minority received meals outside the workplace (4.5%). PRs were thought to have an important role in continuing medical education (66.1%) and to provide accurate information about new drugs (74.2%). Opinions were divided on the appropriateness of gifts from PRs. Most thought that stationery and meals provided by the industry did not affect prescribing behavior (89.7% and 75.8%, respectively). Factors that predicted a positive attitude toward gifts from PRs were male, orthopedic specialty vs. internal medicine, more interactions with PRs, a positive attitude toward informational value, and no rules banning meetings with PRs. CONCLUSION: Involvement in pharmaceutical promotional activities is still common among practicing physicians in Japan, although the extent of the involvement had declined. Rules banning meetings with PRs appear to continue being effective at limiting a physician's involvement with promotional activities and their critical attitudes toward gifts from PRs.
